Fast food workers protest for higher pay

Yesterday (August 29), fast food workers in 50 cities held marches and protests demanding their pay be raised from minimum wage to $15 per hour - more than double minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. These were not teenagers who worked part-time or during the summer; these were adults whose wages support their families. According to Headline News this morning, the average fast food worked makes around $18,000-19,000 per year - well below the poverty level for a single income home.

What do you think? Should fast food workers be paid above minimum wage? How much? Should minimum wage be raised?

Read the following articles and blog posts, then make an informed and thoughtful comment. I have tried to include links that support both sides of the debate. Consider both sides before commenting.

Reuters "Trying to raise a family on a fast-food salary"

Do you know your First Amendment rights?

Quick - name the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment... Can you do it?

1. Speech
2. Press
3. Religion
4. Petition
5. Assembly

So, what do they mean? Can you yell anything you want anywhere you want? Can you wear a t-shirt with a curse word on it? Can you stand up in the middle of McDonald's and yell "Fire!"? Can you and your friends congregate across the street from the school and protest the new dress code?

Find out at the Illinois First Amendment Center.

Infographic: Online Video Habits of Teenagers

A Closer Look at Teen Online Video Consumption

I love infographics. I think they are cool. Infographics are great at cramming a lot of useful information into one page or poster.

Magnet Media Labs used an infographic to communicate the results of a 2012 Pew Research Center study of teenagers' online video habits.

Some interesting points from the infographic:
  • 37 percent of teens use video chat, 27 percent record and upload videos, and 13 percent stream live videos.
  • About 80 percent of Internet-using teens use social media, and the ones that do tend to be more involved with video.
  • Teens who come from high-income families are the most likely to video chat, but are the least likely to stream video. Teens from low-income families are the most likely to stream video.

Is Online Learning Coming Soon To High Schools?

Jeff Dunn, of Edudemic discusses the idea of online learning in secondary schools.

Normally, finding out your kids are watching their teacher on YouTube would cause panic, but not if the video they are watching is a math lecture about determining probability. Perhaps your child is having difficulty with learning how to use direct object pronouns in Spanish, and is going online to review lectures.

This digital approach called “flipping the classroom” is already being used by K-12 teachers across the nation.

25 different learning styles. 1 room. 1 teacher. What can we do?

Yes, I am a geek. I admit it. Even on the weekend, I'm reading up on trends in education, advice from other teachers, education news.

This morning I thought, Are students and parents really aware of what teachers are thinking about as we educate 21st century learners?

For just one small glimpse into the ever-changing landscape of education, through the eyes of a teacher, check out this technology integration post at Edutopia.

By the way, for the other geeks out there... Edutopia is a product of the George Lucas Educational Foundation. Yes, George Lucas. As in, Star Wars. How cool is that? George Lucas is a driving force in the world of modern education.

"Fail, and Fail Hard"

"You can't control where you were born, the family you were born into, what you look like, you can't control any of those circumstances, the only thing you can control is how you react."
You may not know the name, but Aisha Taylor has experienced rave success, like starring on "Friends", and brave failures. Television star, Ivy League graduate, gamer, comedian, snowboarder - Aisha believes that epic failures are necessary to becoming successful.
"I would probably tell my younger self, 'Don't worry about it. You're always going to be a weirdo, and at some point that's going to be OK. That's eventually going to be your calling card, or your badge of courage, that you're going to be a weird kid.'"
