Manuscript Speech

Just to get us over any initial nerves we might have about speaking in front of our class, our first speech will be painless. You can even write it out word for word (this will be the only speech where that is allowed without deduction).

Speeches begin Thursday, August 22, beginning of class. All students should be prepared to go at that time.
Time goal:
3 minutes, though there is no penalty for going over or under the goal.
Topic:
If you could host a dinner party and invite any 4-6 people (alive or dead), who would you invite? Explain who and why.
Format:
Speeches are constructed like essays. Begin with an attention-getter (shocking statistic, emotional story, rhetorical questions - something to get the audience interested), followed by a short introduction where you preview your main points. Next, go through your main points one by one (like the body of an essay). Finally, wrap up your speech by reiterating (briefly) your main points, followed by a final thought or lasting impression. That final thought or lasting impression should keep us thinking about your speech after you have finished. Try to relate it to your attention-getter. For instance, if you asked rhetorical questions in your introduction, consider answering them at your final thought, or ask a new set of rhetorical questions.
Sources:
No sources are required for this speech, but future speeches will require sources.
Speaking order:
Volunteers accepted first. Random order will be drawn if there are no volunteers.
Preparation days in class:
Tues 8/20 and Wed 8/21 (partial time each period)
